ClearConsent
Privacy Policy

Version 1.0.0  ยท  Last updated: March 2026

TL;DR

ClearConsent's developer collects zero data about you. Your API key lives only on your own device. When you analyse text, it goes directly from your browser to Anthropic's API using your own key โ€” we never see it, store it, or touch it.

1 Who We Are

ClearConsent is a Google Chrome extension that translates cookie banners, privacy policies, and terms of service into plain English. It works by forwarding the relevant text to the Anthropic Claude API on your behalf.

The extension has no backend server, no database, and no analytics platform. All processing happens either in your browser or via your own Anthropic account.

2 What Data the Extension Handles

Your Anthropic API Key

To use ClearConsent you supply your own Anthropic API key. This is saved locally to your browser using Chrome's storage.local API. It never leaves your device except to authenticate requests sent directly to api.anthropic.com. We never receive, see, or store it.

Page or Banner Text

When you click Analyse, the text you have selected (a cookie banner, highlighted text, or pasted content) is sent to Anthropic's API to generate a plain-English summary. That text:

Third-party notice: Text you analyse is processed by Anthropic under their own policies. We recommend reviewing Anthropic's Privacy Policy to understand how API inputs are handled on their end.

3 What We Do Not Collect

4 Permissions Explained

PermissionWhy it is needed
activeTab Allows the extension to read the text of the page currently open in your browser โ€” only when you trigger an analysis. It cannot access other tabs or your browsing history.
storage Saves your Anthropic API key locally on your device so you do not have to re-enter it each time you open the extension.
host: api.anthropic.com Permits the extension to make API calls to Anthropic on your behalf. No other external hosts are contacted by the extension.

5 Data Retention & Deletion

Because we collect no data, there is nothing for us to retain or delete on our end.

Your API key stays in your browser's local storage until you remove it. To clear it, open the extension, click the settings icon, and delete your key โ€” or go to Chrome Settings โ†’ Privacy and Security โ†’ Clear browsing data and clear site data.

6 Children's Privacy

ClearConsent is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect any information from children.

7 Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
